Let’s Create A National Museum of Disability History, Culture, and Civil Rights
The Vision of the Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance (PMPA) is to initiate, encourage, and work alongside all disability advocates, to create a national museum – a place of learning and memory – in Washington, DC. It will honor and memorialize the ongoing civil and human rights struggles of Americans with disabilities of all kinds – including the tragedies and the triumphs.
We have drafted legislation for the U.S. Congress to create a two year Commission to study the concept and recommend concrete steps. We will need co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle, in both houses. Grass roots advocacy will be needed.
Now it is time to invite and unite with all disability groups and organizations to generate support. We believe we should create an ad hoc Steering Committee to guide the Commission from its very start. This Steering Committee will be composed of the most accomplished and respected national leaders from every part of the spectrum of disability advocacy.
